Changes to primary school admission policy

Dear Parish Councillors,

You may recall that at the end of last year we consulted on a number of changes to the Leeds City Council admissions policy for Sep 2020. One fundamental change proposed was to introduce catchment priority areas for admission to the primary schools that Leeds City Council is the admission authority for (Community and Voluntary Controlled schools). This was in response to concerns raised by elected members and some parents that the admissions policy did not work well in some parts of the city. Historically, the admissions policy for primary schools has prioritised children who have the school as their ‘nearest’ school, defined by ‘nearest’ polygon shapes. We reviewed the existing admissions policy for community primary and voluntary controlled primary schools to propose changes that offer a more meaningful priority for applicants.

Earlier this year Executive Board approved that ‘nearest priority is no longer included in the policy for Community and Voluntary Controlled Primary Schools and applications will be prioritised based on catchment area priority’. This is the policy that was determined and will apply to school admissions from 2020 onwards, for community and voluntary controlled schools.

Maps denoting the new catchment priority shapes which will apply for admissions into Reception from September 2020 can be found here:

All own admitting authority schools (foundation, academy, free schools and voluntary aided schools) have also determined their admissions policies and these are published on each school’s website.
